Background & Usage

The Quartz Horizontal Magnetometer (QHM), developed by D. La Cour of the Danish Meteorological Institute in the early 1930s, is one of the simplest instruments for the precise determination of horizontal intensity. Light and robust, it can be transported easily, thus making it popular for field measurements as well as magnetic observatory work. On the negative side, the quartz fibres are susceptible to moisture and fungal growth. QHMs are still in use in many parts of the world to this day.
