Background & Usage

This dip circle is identical to the one used by the Dominion Observatory for measuring inclination during magnetic surveys carried out between 1907 and the late 1940s. If equipped with the proper attachments, the instrument could also be used to determine total intensity by Lloyd’s method.

This particular instrument may have been used during Project Musk-Ox in 1947.
